About the Black Dog Institute

Science. Compassion. Action.

1 in 5 of us will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year. In Australia that’s around 5 million people. And roughly 60% of these people won’t seek help.

As the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.

We do this through ‘translational’ research. Integrating our research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections and create real-world change.

Our partnerships with people with lived experience, federal, state and local governments, communities, schools, corporate Australia and others in the mental health sector enables us to drive evidence-informed change in mental health where it’s needed most.

Our Evolution Since our foundation in 1985 as the ‘Mood Disorders Unit’ at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, we have been at the forefront of mental health research. Rapidly evolving to drive the creation of new knowledge and ensure that clinical best practice continues to be improved and refined in line with the latest evidence.

Today, our focus has expanded to address new challenges and opportunities in mental health – suicide prevention, digital innovation, lived experience, youth and workplace mental health. Our work in mood disorders continues through our investigation of new and better ways to treat and prevent conditions like anxiety and depression through digital tools and novel treatments.

Already, we are seeing impact nationally and internationally with major initiatives such as LifeSpan, CRESP, myCompass and Bite Back.

Our Strategy Black Dog Institute has a clearly articulated vision for a mentally healthier world. This vision guides our 2022-2026 strategy to deliver research with real world impact to treat, manage and prevent common mental health conditions and suicide in workplaces, schools, health settings and the wider community.
